Journalists at the Doncaster Free Press have been on strike for two weeks. They are fighting all-out to defend their jobs and the local papers that serve South Yorkshire’s public. Graham Huston, the editor in chief at the Free Press has shut down offices in Goole and Epworth and intends closing others across the patch.
As well as throwing hard working journalists on the dole the quality of our local papers will suffer. Huston intends to run all of the South Yorkshire Press from the Doncaster office, with a reduced pool of journalists. Quality journalism is bound to suffer. For example, the long-serving and excellent sports journalist, Peter Catt has been made redundant. Sports coverage will be much worse as a result.
Our local papers are a key part of a democratic society. Graham Huston is not bothered about the big political stories in Doncaster like how DMBC’s chopping of services is affecting their users. He is quite happy to accept the word of his mate Peter Davies that everything is going as well as possible. Press releases from Davies and the DMBC executives will suffice to keep us informed.
The Free Press journalists are fighting a heroic battle against the same market madness that pays bankers and fat cats millions and threatens to destroy our public services. Cameron and the Tories want to divide public and private sector workers over pay and pensions so his billionaire backers like Rupert Murdoch and British Gas can reap super profits. That is why we must support the strikers one hundred per cent.
