Tony Benn is launching the Coalition of Resistance in Doncaster on the 27th October at the Danum Hotel, 7.30pm. Lots of people will want to come and hear what he has to say about the Con-Dem coalition’s so called inevitable cuts and how we can and must come together and oppose them. Tony was central to the launch of the national organisation which has brought together many leading trade unionists, MPs, notable public figures and thousands of people across the UK into one organisation to oppose the cuts.
Also speaking at the event will be Alan Gibbons, well known childrens author and “Campaign for the Book” activist who is at the forefront of the campaign to defend libraries, one of the first targets for the cutters. Alan has spoken in Doncaster several times recently, at the protests organised by Save Doncaster Libraries over the proposed closure of Bessacarr, Warmsworth and Wheatley libraries. He comes here again to help build a broad united campaign against cuts in Doncaster.
Hazel Raven, UCU Doncaster Branch Chair, will speak in a personal capacity. Hazel was part of the successful campaign to prevent large scale redundancies at Doncaster College recently and continues to organise staff at the college against renewed attacks. She has also been central to the Defend Diversity, Education, Jobs and Services campaign in Doncaster.
Paul Holmes, UNISON Kirklees Branch Secretary is also speaking in a personal capacity. Paul, a Labour Party member, has run for General Secretary of UNISON and has an excellent record of standing up for his members.
